Monopoly Go!
Released 11 April 2023 Developer Scopely
A mobile take on the Monopoly board game: you roll dice to move around themed boards, collect cash and upgrade five landmarks on each board. Rolls trigger mini-games, hourly events and bank heists against other players, and you collect sticker albums that can be traded with friends. It is free to play and designed for short, frequent sessions.
How it makes money
Harmful: chance, compulsion or exploitation
Monopoly Go! is free to download. Scopely sells dice-roll and cash bundles as in-app offers: the Australian App Store lists them from A$2.99 to A$149.99, and Google Play shows single items up to A$299.99. Dice rolls are limited each day and players can buy more, while sticker albums, hourly events and mini-games such as Prize Drop keep rewards random and short-lived. The store description says purchases include random items. Gross bookings were reported to have passed US$5 billion by April 2025.
How you pay
- Free-to-play
The App Store AU lists in-app offers from A$2.99 ('Offer 1') to A$149.99 ('Offer 15'); Google Play (AU) shows single items from A$1.49 to A$299.99.
- Loot boxes
The App Store description says the game 'Includes random-item purchases'; Google Play and the ESRB rating also flag in-game purchases that include random items.

Techniques it uses to keep you paying or playing
- Wait or pay
Daily dice rolls are limited and players can buy more (Wikipedia); Android Central called out a daily energy system.
- Game currency
In-game cash and dice rolls are the two currencies; both can be earned in play and both are bundled into paid offers.
minor part of the game - FOMO timers
New events run every hour (store description); Destructoid describes a 30-minute event that could give a large advantage, which made the writer feel the app had to be reopened.
- Collect all
Sticker albums pay large rewards when completed, and stickers are traded with friends and in Facebook trading groups (store description).
- Social nudges
Bank heists on other players, co-op Community Chest events and sticker trading are built around friends; the Monopoly Go website invites you to connect Facebook and Contacts, and Destructoid says the game prompts you to invite friends at launch.
- Slot-machine
Mini-games such as Prize Drop (a plinko game) and Cash Grab pay out random rewards (store description); Germany's USK rating cites 'pressure to play excessively'.
minor part of the game - Always online
The store description says an internet connection is required to play.
minor part of the game - Never-ending
New themed boards and events are added continuously (the store description talks about an 'expanding universe').

Android Central ↗
Judged it well made and enjoyable without spending, but a heavily monetised time-waster with almost no real gameplay, a daily energy limit and constant pop-up offers.

Age ratings judge content (violence, language, gambling themes). They say little about how hard a game pushes spending — that's what the badges above are for. About rating boards
Safety & parental controls
Who can talk to your child, and what can they buy?
- No chat
- Players can interact with strangers
- No user-made content
- Account: not recorded
- Terms of service minimum age: 13
No text chat in the game itself, but Scopely runs a separate MONOPOLY GO!Chat app (rated 17+ on the App Store AU) for messaging friends and teammates and arranging sticker trades. Heists, co-op events and Facebook trading groups can put players in contact with people they may not know. Scopely's terms say users must be at least the age to consent to data processing (13 in the United States, 16 in some EU countries) and that anyone under 18 needs a parent's permission. Apple's AU rating is 16+; Google Play AU shows 'General' and Germany's USK rates it 16. Turn off in-app purchases in the phone's settings.
