Roblox
Released 1 September 2006 Developer Roblox Corporation
Roblox is a platform rather than a single game: millions of free 3D 'experiences' made by other players and studios, from obstacle courses and role-play to shooters and tycoons, all reached through one avatar and one account. Players can also build and publish their own experiences in Roblox Studio. Australia's eSafety Commissioner describes it as the second most popular game with Australian children.
How it makes money
Harmful: chance, compulsion or exploitation
Roblox is free to play. Players buy Robux with real money (Google Play AU shows in-app items from A$0.89 to A$369.99 per item) to spend on avatar items and on purchases inside experiences, and some experiences sell paid random items. An optional subscription, Roblox Plus (US$4.99 a month from 30 April 2026), replaced Premium and gives 10 to 20 per cent discounts, free private servers and fee-free Robux transfers. Creators earn Robux they can cash out through the Developer Exchange (US$0.0038 per Robux, from 30,000 earned Robux), and Roblox keeps a share of sales: for avatar items sold inside experiences the split is 30 per cent creator, 40 per cent game owner and 30 per cent Roblox. Linked parent accounts can set a monthly Robux spending limit and spending alerts.
How you pay
- Free-to-play
Free to play. The App Store AU lists the Roblox Premium monthly tiers as in-app purchases (A$7.99 to A$29.99), and Google Play (AU) shows single in-app items from A$0.89 to A$369.99.
- Creator coins
Players, studios and individual creators make the experiences and avatar items, and everything on the platform is priced in Robux.
- Cash trading
The Developer Exchange turns earned Robux into real money for eligible creators, and rare 'Limited' avatar items trade between players for large Robux prices.
minor part of the game - Loot boxes
Experiences can sell paid random items for Robux (the App Store and Google Play flag random items). Roblox requires odds to be shown, and the platform can block paid random items for some users by region and age.
minor part of the game - Ad-funded
Advertising appears in experiences; ads were hidden from under-13s from March 2023, although advergames were not covered (Wikipedia).

Techniques it uses to keep you paying or playing
- Game currency
Robux are bought with real money and spent on avatar items, game passes and in-experience items; creators earn them and can cash them out.
- Creator labour
Creators cash out earned Robux at US$0.0038 each (US$114 per 30,000, minimum 30,000, 13 and over). For avatar items sold inside experiences Roblox keeps 30 per cent and the game owner 40 per cent (Roblox creator documentation).
- Made scarce
'Limited' avatar items are scarce collectibles that trade on supply and demand, with the most valuable costing millions of Robux (Wikipedia).
minor part of the game - Kids' spending
Roblox now runs Roblox Kids accounts for under-9s and Roblox Select for 9 to 15, and purchases come from a parent's card or gift cards; parents can set a monthly spending limit and alerts (Roblox parental controls page).
- Never-ending
New experiences are published every day, so there is no end to the content.

Age ratings judge content (violence, language, gambling themes). They say little about how hard a game pushes spending — that's what the badges above are for. About rating boards
Safety & parental controls
Who can talk to your child, and what can they buy?
- Text and voice chat
- Players can interact with strangers
- Contains user-made content (not pre-checked by the developer)
- Needs an online account
Age checks (facial age estimation or ID) are required to use chat: mandatory in Australia from December 2025 and worldwide from January 2026 (Wikipedia). Accounts are split into Roblox Kids (under 9), Roblox Select (9 to 15) and standard (16+); Kids accounts have chat off by default (per coverage of the June 2026 launch) and parents can block or approve individual games, limit chat, set screen time and spending limits once they link their own account. Voice chat is off by default for under-13s, and sensitive-issue experiences are blocked by default for under-13s. Restricted experiences need ID-verified 18+ users. On 20 August 2026 Australia's eSafety Commissioner accepted a court-enforceable undertaking after its testing found adults could contact young children without consent; Roblox agreed to stop adults contacting unknown children without parental consent, make children's accounts private by default and appoint an independent auditor. Apple's AU rating is 16+; Google Play AU shows PG.
