Among Us

Released 15 June 2018 Developer Innersloth

A party game for four to fifteen players in which a crew tries to finish tasks on a spaceship while one or more hidden impostors sabotage things and eliminate crewmates. Between rounds everyone discusses who seems suspicious and votes to eject someone, so the game is mostly talking, bluffing and spotting lies. Rounds are short and cartoon-styled, and it is popular with children and teenagers playing with friends.

How it makes money

Caution: built to push spending

On PC and consoles Among Us is a one-off purchase: A$7.49 on Steam, A$7.45 on Xbox, A$6.45 on Switch and A$5.95 on PlayStation. On iPhone and Android it is free with ads, and 'Remove All Ads' costs A$2.99 on the App Store. Every version also sells cosmetic items (skins, hats, pets and 'Cosmicubes') for Stars, a currency bought with real money (30 Stars is A$4.99 on the App Store), or for Beans, which are earned by playing. The extras are cosmetic only, and two maps that were once paid add-ons were made free in 2020.

How you pay

  • Pay once

PC and console versions are bought once: A$7.49 on Steam, A$7.45 on Xbox, A$6.45 on Nintendo Switch and A$5.95 on PlayStation (regular prices on 22 October 2026). Cosmetic extras are optional.

  • Free-to-play

The iPhone and Android versions cost nothing to download and sell cosmetic bundles inside the app, for example a 30 Star Bundle for A$4.99 and pet or skin bundles from A$2.99 to A$4.99 on the Australian App Store.

  • Cosmetics

Skins, hats, visors, pets and Cosmicubes are sold in the in-game store; ESRB notes the cosmetics are visual only and do not affect play.

  • Ad-funded

The free mobile versions show ads (Innersloth: 'free, supported by ads') and the 'Remove All Ads' purchase costs A$2.99 on the App Store. PC and console versions have no ads.

Techniques it uses to keep you paying or playing

  • Game currency

Stars are bought with real money (US$1.99 for 20 up to US$24.99 for 300 per ESRB; 30 Stars is A$4.99 on the App Store) and Beans are earned by playing. Both can buy items, bundles and Cosmicubes.

  • Rewarded ads

On mobile, watching ads can earn rewards in countries where it is available; a 2026 update changelog raised the daily cap for ad rewards to 2.

    minor part of the game
  • Daily pressure

Beans, XP and Pods come from daily challenges as well as ordinary matches, so there is a small nudge to log in each day.

Used to, but no longer

  • Paid DLCremoved

The MIRA HQ and Polus maps launched as paid add-ons at US$4, fell to US$2 in January 2020 and became free in June 2020; the map packs now sell only skins. The Airship map was always free.

    Game Informer ↗

    Liana Ruppert · 29 September 2020 · PC

Enjoyed the chaotic, meme-friendly social deduction and the lack of grind, while finding the visuals basic and the gameplay narrow.

    Nintendo Life ↗

    PJ O'Reilly · 21 December 2020 · Switch

Called the Switch version a great, cheap and tense game with cross-play, but found typed chat clumsy and noted the missing cosmetics at launch.

    Push Square ↗

    Sammy Barker · 24 December 2021 · PS5 · Good

Found it an inventive party game that works best with friends, with crossplay and a low price in its favour and toxic public lobbies and awkward controls against it.

Who can talk to your child, and what can they buy?

  • Text chat
  • Players can interact with strangers
  • No user-made content
  • Account: not recorded

Public games match your child with strangers; a private lobby with a room code keeps a game to people they know. Accounts for children are put in Quick Chat (fixed phrases only) unless a parent allows more through Innersloth's parent portal, run by Kids Web Services; players 13 and over can use Free Chat, which has a Censor Chat word filter. The age is self-declared when the account is made, so check it was entered correctly. There is no voice chat in the game itself, though many groups use Discord or a console party chat alongside it.
